$ 27 Billion National Challenge

Fall risk has been called a $ 27 Billion Dollar Challenge.  The national Council on Aging states that accidents and injuries due to falls impose an enormous burden on our nation's healthcare system, every individual, and the society as a whole.

Falls and fall related injuries are not rare events.   They are one of the most serious life changing events and are often life threatening.  In fact, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths and a major cause of  non-fatal hospital admissions due to trauma.

Falls and fall related injuries are not rare events. They are one of the most serious life changing events and are often life threatening.

Approximately one third of adults 65 and older fall each year and 60% of those who die from falls are 75 and older.    Those that fall are almost 5 times more likely to be admitted to a long-term care facility for a more than a year.

24 Hours A Day Even Little Falls Can Cause Major Injuries.  The most common injuries are also some of the most troublesome.   They are fractures to the vertebrae, hip, arms, legs, ankles, pelvis, and even hands.

Where Do Falls Happen?

A majority of seniors with fall related injuries were at home on a single level with no stairs.  Most were simply standing or walking when the fall occurred.

Contributing Factors To Fall Risk

  • Poor or inadequate lighting.
  • Rugs or carpets that slide or wrinkle.
  • Clutter and stuff that can cause a trip hazard.
  • Unsafe stairs due to poor lighting or   items left on the stairs.

Simple Things You Can Do To Reduce Fall Risks

  • During the day, open curtains or blinds to properly light pathways.
  • Install extra lighting along dark pathways.
  • Purchase rugs with non-slip backing or apply non-slip material to existing rugs.
  • Clear items and clutter away from all major pathways, especially those used from your bed to the bathroom.
  • Install nightlights throughout your home-- newer LED nightlights use only about 1/4 watt and last for years.
  • Consider purchasing an elevated toilet seat to make getting up/down easier.
  • Move beds against the wall to prevent it from sliding while you get in/out of bed.
  • Install grab rails in showers and tubs and place non-skid decals in tubs to prevent slipping.
  • Store everyday items you are likely to use in easy to get to cabinets and drawers.  You don't want to be climbing up on a step stool every time you want to get to your tea pot or casserole dish.

While there is no way to completely eliminate fall risk, there are things you can do to reduce the risk.   Take stock of your surroundings or those of your loved one.   Look for electric cords that may be a trip hazard, loose carpets or rugs, poor lighting, unsafe grab rails, or even unstable furniture.
